A poem is a poem ...
but a poem prompt prompts for poems —
itself, poem or not.
A prompt for poem prompts ...
could recurse ... It's like turtles
all of the way down!
If this poem itself
were prompt ... would it be its own
prompt and circumstance?

This triptych haiku is an example of what I would call a Gödel poem: a poem that reflects on itself endlessly.

A prim and proper poem that preempts the prompt, perhaps.
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of a prim and proper poem, one reader (in email) thought this poem could not be proper haiku since "poem" is [always] two syllables. One wonders what planet they are living on. :-)
ReplyDeleteMerriam-Webster's Collegiate® Dictionary, Eleventh Edition lists five pronunciations for poem:
\pō'-əm, pō'-im, pōm also po'(-)im, pō'-em\
There is even an audio link on the online edition for pōm.
And beautifully pronounced, too!
Also, see O Auntie Em, there's no place like poem.
ReplyDeleteOh you have gotta love bloggoland, a place where there is set in concrete rules of pronounciating of everything for everybody and rules about syllabubbles in haiku too and where people care so much about them they will write you a letter to let you know.
ReplyDeleteActually I liked the title..it hitss right on target..
